Let's break that tie (and go FAR beyond)! It should not be hard when you consider:
- WVKO is LOCAL, with sports, news, weather, and local talent.
- We are the MAJORITY. The 80% of America that is fed up with GOP corruption and incompetence finally has a station that agrees with them.
Here are four ideas, any of which we can do as individuals:
1. TELL YOUR FRIENDS. Each of us know someone who will thank us when we tell them about WVKO. Check your email for who to tell. I have a pix of me and Steph on my desk at work. If anyone notices, I tell them. One on one is the best. (SCRIPT: I see you have NPR on your car radio. Do you know about WVKO? It's something you cn swith to during fundraisers and Bluegrass Ramble.)
2. ADVOCATE ADVOCACY. WVKO is unique in that it's fans are not just fans, but advocates. Call in to Mike Cole and other local WVKO programs and urge listeners to tell their friends about the station, and support its sponsors. Announce the same at progressive groups you belong to.
3. LETTERS & CALL-INS. The Dispatch is unlikely to run a "listen to WVKO" letter, but local papers are much more in need of Letters to the Editor. Also, call in to Fred Andrle. A hook to use with Fred: In the past, he has typified WVKO's talent such as Ed Schultz as just a left-wing version of right-wingers such as Limbaugh. Ask him if the truth is just a left wing version of a lie.
4. TOUT COMMUNITY CALENDAR. WVKO has community calendar. Tell progressive groups they can email the station and get their events announced for free--and by the way, please tell your group about the station. (I'm going to email this to Stonewall Dems, Gahanna Progressives, and a local MoveOn contact.)
5. TOUT SPECIFIC PROGRAMS. Doug and I are working on a flyer we will send to local churches telling them about State of Belief, and I'm going to email my GLB friends about Radio Outlook. (Blue State Diner and Mike Cole are good for almost anything local, from politics to environmentalism.)
YOUR HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT:
This should not be too hard. Take item #4 and email a group you know or belong to--and report back here that you have done it. I'll get you started. Here is a draft of what I am emailing to Gahanna Progressives:
Sheryl:
It was great seeing you at the last meeting. Did you know WVKO now has an on-air Community Calendar, giving free announcements for groups like ours? All we have to do is go to their web site and use the contact emailer, here: https://www.wvko1580.com/contact/
Well the times I watch Fred Andrle on the Ohio Channel (34.2 for people who have digital TV Tuners via built into the TV's or have a DTV set top box. Or have digital cable/sat boxes that carry the station.) Some of his show topics have nothing to do with local issues. Heck when there was a 11 month hiatus of progressive talk in Columbus I listen to that other local mid day show on that other commercial AM station. At least that station was talking about local issues and taking calls from lesser life forms. Plus I found it amusing. Anyway I'm posting the info of Bill Press on local message boards. Since most progressives are tech savvy. Then the Lurleen's husbands who can't get the words in the big box.
